Sometimes exercising with a buddy can help you--but not if you don't choose the right partner.

We've all heard the phrase, "Misery loves company," so it makes sense that many people bring a friend when it comes to working out.

It's important to be aware of how your training will change when you buddy up--the right partner can amplify your workout, while the wrong one could ambush it.
For the bulk of your training, look for someone who trains at similar distances and paces in swimming, biking and running. This person will help you stay on course for workouts where you want to make consistent efforts (i.e. when you aren't recovering or adding speed).

When your workout calls for more intensity - that's the time to call in your uber-athletic friend. You're looking for someone who is able to push you a little bit when needed. If you're doing a tempo workout or 800-meter repeats on the track, this person will likely be faster than you, or at least able to cover the distance comfortably while you push yourself to keep up.
For workouts where you're supposed to recover or maintain a very laid back pace, find that friend that you're able to talk with for hours. Often times, you'll want to push yourself in these slower-paced efforts, but having a friend that will default to a laid back pace will keep your workout where it should be.
Need a training partner? Don't be afraid to make friends at local races or training events, such as the Dunn Tire Mountain Goat training runs conducted by the Syracuse Track Club. Or say hello to the person next to you in spin class. Chances are, you have more in common than you think.
Lisa Barnes teaches spin classes and aerobics at Gold's Gym. She is a triathlete who has completed the Ironman in Lake Placid. See her videos weekly at http://www.syracuse.com/fitness. Reach her through asmith@syracuse.com
